Spring Session 2009

The Orange County Buddhist Church Buddhist Education Center offers diverse selection of classes for those seeking to learn more about Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu.  Classes will be taught by OCBC's resident ministers and others recognized for their knowledge of  Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu and will offer an in-depth look at a wide range of topics. These classes are open to both the OCBC membership and the greater community and Sangha of Southern California.

GENZA THE MYOKONIN - INSTRUCTOR REV. JIM YANAGIHARA

Saturday mornings. Four week course. 10:45 to 12:15. May 2, 9. 16, and 23.

Myokonin are the most exemplary followers of the Nembutsu in the Shin Buddhist tradition. Despite being uneducated and in some cases illiterate, Shin Buddhist Myokonin are regarded as deeply spiritual people, even on the level of Zen Masters, as D.T. Suzuki asserts in his writings. This course will focus on the life and spirituality of Genza the Myokonin. The text will be the recently published Genza the Myokonin, which, in manga or comic format, illustrates the life and spiritual episodes of Genza. Rev. Jim Yanagihara is a retired BCA minister who has dedicated much of his life to the study of the Myokonin. $20 registration.

Introduction to Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu - Instructor Jon Turner.
Monday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm. Eight weeks. May 4, 11, 18, June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Course will be geared for the beginner to Buddhism or for those who have never had a systematic presentation of Buddhism. Registration: $40.

What are we chanting? (San Butsu Ge) - Instructor Reverend Marvin Harada
Tuesday evening, 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Eight weeks. April 7, 21, May 5, 19, June 2, 16, 23, 30. This course will introduce the background on the San Butsu Ge and the Juseige, which we frequently chant in our services. It will also go into a character by character, line by line study of the text. No knowledge of Chinese or Japanese is required, however. These two short chants have profound meaning and teaching for our lives today. This course is also offered as an Institute of Buddhist Studies extension course. Registration: $40.

Lectures on the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life - Instructor Reverend Marvin Harada
Thursday morning. 10:30 to 12 noon. Seven weeks. April 30, May 7, 14, 21, June 11, 18, 25. The Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life is one of three main sutras that Shin Buddhism is based upon. This course will study the main sections and passages of this important sutra, and the implications those teachings have for our life today. Registration: $40.

Buddhism class in Japanese - (正信偈とともに) Instructor Rev. Mutsumi Wondra
Saturday morning. Four weeks. 9:30-10:30 am. April 25, May 2, 9, 16. Registration. $20.

BEC日本語真宗講座では引き続いて、ご開山親鸞聖人が書かれた「正信偈」を皆さまと
ご一緒に学んで参ります。途中から参加されても大丈夫です。ご一緒に味わいながら、
お聖人がお示しくださった生かされるよろこびに目覚めていきましょう。

Q: When are the Winter classes?

A: Classes start in January 2008.  Please check each course description for the date of the first class.
 

Q: Where will classes be held?

A: Most of the classes will be held in the OCBC Mini chapel, adjacent to Main Sanctuary.  We also normally offer a course at a facility in Irvine.
 

Q: Can only OCBC members take these courses?

A: These courses are open to everyone.  OCBC membership is not required to attend.
 

Q: What is the cost for a course, and are materials included in that cost?

A: Tuition is $40 for most of the courses. Some printed materials are included in that fee.  Other required books and materials can be purchased at the first class session.
