Summer Session 2008
The Orange County Buddhist Church Buddhist Education Center
offers diverse selection of classes for those seeking to learn more about
Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu. Classes will be taught by OCBC's resident
ministers and others recognized for their knowledge of Buddhism and Jodo
Shinshu and will offer an in-depth look at a wide range of topics. These classes
are open to both the OCBC membership and the greater community and Sangha of
Southern California. Introduction to Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu - Instructor Bill Dearth
Tuesday evenings. 7:30-9:00 pm. Four weeks. July 22, 29, Aug. 5, 12. Course will be geared for
the beginner to Buddhism or for those who have never had a systematic presentation of Buddhism.
Registration $30.
Buddhism: The Musical - Instructor Jon Turner
Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm. Four weeks. Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28. This course will introduce both Buddhist philosophy and practice through a series of nine contemporary pop songs. Each song
will represent a different stage or aspect within the chronology of the Buddhist path. We will begin
by examining the causes of anxiety and stress within our everyday lives. Next, we will discuss
how this can lead to a fundamental desire for change. Then we will explore the issue of doubt
which can either jeopardize or accelerate this change. And fi nally we will try to defi ne the insight
one may realize as the result of this Buddhist philosophy and practice. Songs will be included
from the following artists: The Beatles, Cake, George Harrison, B.B. King, U2, Neil Young, Baz
Luhrmann, Moby and Green Day. Registration $30.

The Japanese Book Club starts this August, and will meet once a month. For the fi rst book club,
we will read, “Jodo Shinshu – what kind of teaching is it?” (approximately 50 pages in Japanese).

Q: When are the Winter classes?
A: Classes start in January 2008. Please check each
course description for the date of the first class.
Q: Where will classes be held?
A: Most of the classes will be held in the OCBC Mini chapel, adjacent to
Main Sanctuary. We also normally offer a course at a facility in Irvine.
Q: Can only OCBC members take these courses?
A: These courses are open to everyone. OCBC membership is
not required to attend.
Q: What is the cost for a course, and are materials included in that cost?
A: Tuition is $40 for most of the courses. Some printed materials are
included in that fee. Other required books and materials can be purchased at the first class session.
